Chocolate mousse will always, ALWAYS remind me of high school French class. Which, for me, is full of awesome memories and nostalgia. “Mousse au chocolat” is one of those quintessential French foods you learn in basic French, along with crème caramel and steak frites. It’s one of those things that brings me back to Freshman year when I fell head over heels in love with French and France itself. My senior year I went to Paris with a bunch of my French class pals. We even started a French club where we ate loads of brie and crêpes and watched French films. We were all totally smitten.
Anyway, though I’d love to eat mousse au chocolat regularly, it’s maybe not the healthiest thing for you. So here it is. My first official attempt at a dessert that incorporates sneaky secret ingredients. Remember when everyone started going crazy over black bean brownies? Personally, I like black beans and avocados just fine as they are, but you have to admit it’s attractive packaging for “good for you foods”. And since I’m only human, I can’t turn down an opportunity to whip nutritious foods into a chocolatey dessert.
These little mousse cups were slightly sweet – if you’re looking to feed a sweet tooth, maybe add some more sweetener – but had more of a dark chocolate flavor. I tend to prefer dark chocolate. Although I had a piece of a Hershey bar the other day during a s’mores sesh with the fam and I forgot how good milk chocolate is! Moral of the story, pick your chips based on your preference. Dairy-free chips will make this totally vegan too.
This wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it would be when I started tossing things into the blender. I found the avocado flavor difficult to mask at first. I originally was going to try and skip chocolate chips and just do cocoa powder and sweetener, but the chips really upped the chocolate flavor and downplayed the avocado flavor. No offense to my beloved avocados. Love those guys.
Nutritional Super Powers:
- Avocado – Monounsaturated (healthy) Fats, Folate, Vitamin C
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – Magnesium, Zinc, Iron & Manganese
- 2 avocados
- 2 tbsp. honey or sweetener of choice
- 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¾ c. milk (I used cashew)
- 3 tbsp. dark chocolate chips, melted
- Cut avocado length wise and discard pit. Use a large spoon to scoop all the flesh out into a blender or food processor.
- Add honey/sweetener, melted chocolate chips and cocoa powder. Start blending/processing and pour in milk slowly until combined.
- Blend until smooth.
Note: I used a blender and the mousse didn’t turn out as smooth as I would’ve liked. My guess is that a food processor would be best if you’ve got one.
